MASNRN Mission Statement

MASNRN is a practice based research network comprised of a representative, collaborative group of professional school nurses and nurse academicians. Its members believe that students need and deserve high quality school nursing care to help attain their full academic potential. This requires that school nursing embrace evidence-based practice. MASNRN conducts research and uses translational research to support and improve student health outcomes and the efficacy of school nursing care.

What is MASNRN?

MASNRN is the Massachusetts School Nurse  Research Network. Practice-based research networks such as MASNRN are groups of clinical practitioners who come together to study clinical problems in which they share a common interest.

Why was MASNRN Developed ?

Evidence-based school nursing practice is the keystone to providing high quality school health services. Unfortunately, conducting studies is difficult for school nurses to do independently. MASNRN was born out of this recognized need.

It is a collaborative effort of the Massachusetts School Nurse Organization, ( MSNO)  Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s School Health Unit, Boston College William F. Connell School of Nursing.

Who is in MASNRN?

MASNRN is comprised of two main groups,

an oversight board and network members.

The Oversight Board is made up of

of the three collaborating groups. Network Members are School Nurses in Massachusetts.

How Does MASNRN work?

The Oversight Board meets regularly. It decides on research questions to be investigated, designs the research studies, and explores funding options. The study design is then shared with Network Members so they can decide whether they are interested in participating. Network Members choose to participate in only those studies that they are interested in and those that that are

appropriate for their setting. Of course, input from Network Members is always sought. Studies are designed with the busy school nurse in mind. Some studies require as little as several hours while others require a greater time commitment. Often, the data being collected are those that are normally a part of the school nurse’s role.
